If there is meaning in life at all, then there must be a meaning in suffering. Suffering is an ineradicable part of life, even as fate and death. Without suffering and death human life cannot be complete.
Instant gratification is so overrated. It’s about the process. It’s the difficulty. It’s the grind of all of it that you better enjoy. That’s what makes it great.
It is wiser, I believe, to arrive at theory by way of evidence rather than the other way around…. It is more rewarding, in any case, to assemble the facts first and, in the process of arranging them in narrative form, to discover a theory or a historical generalization emerging of its own accord.
There was great leadership in this country at the time of World War II. There was also unrelenting resolve at home, in America’s factories and on the farms, in the cities and the country.
