No one wants to sell to just 12% of the population for the entire length of their careers. It creates a difficult and less-profitable environment. But Hollywood has lived with that limiting mantra, and only a few black stars have managed to break through.
The always-connected culture isn’t as much a contributor as Grace might think. The nervous mind, the monkey mind, will create its own noise. It doesn’t need a new toy.
I try to keep a positive intention, and use whatever resources I have to benefit others. I try to create businesses that I think are not hurtful. I try to do things that I think are helpful to the environment, to the animals, and to the planet.
I just said let’s get some poets on tv. And when they said that sounded unlikely, I made it worse. I said, no man, I want to put a bunch of black poets on stage, too.
We need to hear everyone. We need dialogue between police and the community. They’re angry. They’re hurt. A dialogue can cause a shift in consciousness in the person if he’s understanding you and listening.
I kind of think that artists throughout history, poets throughout history have been criticized for sharing what’s on people’s minds and I don’t think it’s any different now.
